With heavy hearts we report that we lost a close member of our marathon family this past winter: Gus Schmid. Gus was a longtime member of the Saskatoon Amateur Radio Club and also a volunteer for the past few years of the Saskatchewan Marathon. The 2012 Saskatchewan Marathon Organizing Committee would like to share a bit about Gus' important contributions, as Gus recalled for us last year some background on his involvement with the Saskatchewan Marathon.
"I think the first marathon I volunteered at was when it was held at the Usask in the bowl and it was very cold, rainy, and windy and did I mention cold. That was 2006 I believe and I have been involved since that time. I like volunteering and giving back to the community and besides it's fun and you get to meet some interesting people.
I have been involved with the radio communications side of things. Our group provide Ham Radio operators to ride in vehicles, placed at water stations and other areas on the route. We report on progress, any injuries or persons needing assistance and we try to keep the people on the stage informed of the bib numbers of the folks approaching the finish line. We have also placed bike riders with the runners to let us know where everyone is on the race course. In the past we have even had a moving map display that showed where the bike riders were in real time."
Gus' passion for radio operation was evident and we were fortunate to benefit from his talent and dedication.
May you Rest In Peace, Gus. You are missed.

COMING SOON
Jan
I have volunteered with the marathon for the past 6 years. I return every year because it is fun and I meet new people each year. You are part of the excitement that builds the day before. I usually volunteer to pack the bags, then do pick up on the Saturday and then give out medals to the half marathon if I have run the 10k and so I enjoy that.
Count me in for this year!
Dominique Singh
I have been volunteering since 2001 with I think about 1 or 2 years in between when I wasnt around.
I keep coming back to the Sask Marathon because I love the energy of the runners and you really feel their gratitude for the volunteers as well. The Sask marathon has become a family affair, we all like to get involved in some way or another. I have worked at the water stations, road marshalling, volunteered in the food tent and for the past 2 years I have been organizing the food tent.
Heather Arnold
Heather served on the Saskatchewan Marathon Committee for five years as a general volunteer for volunteer orientations, package pickups, race day site cleanup, Food Tent Coordinator, Road Marshall Coordinator and Walk-in Registrations at Race Day expos. She enjoys being involved with Saskatoon's running community as both a race director and volunteer and treasures all the lifelong friendships as a result.
Don Cochrane
Don has been involved as a volunteer for four years. He keeps coming back because of the example of others who have given their time to marshal, time, etc. during his years as a competitive runner. He feels he is simply giving back as he volunteers for the Saskatchewan Marathon as a course marshal.
Thank you, Jan, Dominique, Heather, Don, and the hundreds of other dedicated volunteers that help us out each year. We couldn't do it without wonderful people like you!
